How to collect data for a carbon assessment
Data collection is the most time-consuming step of a carbon assessment. A structured method saves time and makes the result reliable.
What data and where to find it
Energy bills, fuel records, expense reports (travel), accounting (purchases), HR data (headcount, commutes), supplier data. Map the sources and assign a contact per theme.
Primary or secondary data
Primary data (measured, suppliers) is more accurate than average factors (secondary). Start with what you have, then progressively replace with primary data. UltraCarbon structures collection and CSV import.
Frequently asked questions
What if data is missing?
Estimate with ratios or average factors, documenting the assumption. A traced estimate is better than a forgotten item.
How to make collection reliable?
Centralise sources, assign contacts, favour primary data and keep a record of assumptions for verification.
