PEF: the European Product Environmental Footprint
The PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) is the European Commission's harmonised method for measuring a product's multi-criteria environmental impact.
A multi-criteria method
Unlike a carbon footprint alone, the PEF covers multiple impacts (climate, water, resources, etc.) via a harmonised LCA. It aims to compare products on a common basis and fight greenwashing.
PEF and environmental labelling
The PEF underpins European and French environmental labelling (for example on textiles and food). Carbon is a key component. UltraCarbon focuses on the carbon footprint, the heart of these schemes.
Frequently asked questions
PEF or carbon footprint?
The carbon footprint only measures climate; the PEF is multi-criteria. Carbon remains the most tracked indicator and a component of the PEF.
Is the PEF mandatory?
It is rolling out progressively via sector environmental labelling in the EU. Anticipating impact measurement is an advantage.
