GHG Protocol: the global carbon accounting framework
The GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) is the most widely used framework in the world for accounting for organisations' greenhouse gas emissions.
Origin and role
Developed by the WRI and the WBCSD, the GHG Protocol provides harmonised methods. Most frameworks (CSRD, SBTi, BEGES, ISO 14064) refer to it, ensuring the comparability of assessments.
The three scopes
It structures emissions into Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (purchased energy) and Scope 3 (value chain). This now-universal classification is the one UltraCarbon applies.
Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard
The Corporate Standard covers the organisation; the Scope 3 Standard details the 15 categories of indirect emissions (purchases, freight, product use, etc.), often the majority.
Frequently asked questions
GHG Protocol or ISO 14064?
Both are compatible: ISO 14064 builds on the GHG Protocol's principles and adds verification requirements. You can follow both at once.
Is the GHG Protocol free?
Yes, the standards are public and freely accessible. Applying them correctly, however, requires method and reliable data.
