Commuting: calculating and reducing the carbon footprint

Commuting (Scope 3) depends on distances, modes and the number of on-site days. A simple survey is enough to estimate.

How to estimate them

Use the number of employees, the average one-way distance, working days and the modal split (car, public transport, bike). Distance is counted round trip. Remote work reduces the number of days.

How to reduce them

Encourage soft mobility and public transport (sustainable mobility allowance), carpooling and remote work. UltraCarbon offers an aggregated questionnaire to estimate this item.

Does remote work reduce the footprint?

It reduces commuting but adds home consumption. The net balance is usually favourable, especially for long car commutes.

Do you need to survey every employee?

An average is enough: a quick survey (distance, main mode) gives a good estimate, refinable later.
